MAINTENANCE
Leylands are clean trees. They require minimal care and should last a long time if taken care of properly.
Watering
After planting your tree, it should be watered deeply two or three times per week. When the roots are established in about 6 weeks, you can discontinue the watering unless it is unusually hot or dry.
Fertilizing
About 3 or 4 weeks after planting your trees, fertilize lightly with a general-purpose fertilizer. The overall best fertilizer is the timed release variety. Sprinkle one teaspoon full around the drip line of the tree in the spring (March 31), summer (June 30) and fall (9/30).
Pruning
Leylands are most beautiful when allowed to develop into their natural shape. Occasionally you may have to trim a wayward branch, but they will naturally grow into a feathery pyramid. Regular trimming is necessary to retain a formal hedge, screen or windbreak.
